For the past two years, I’ve been deep in the world of hormones—not just out of curiosity, but out of necessity. When I first began experiencing perimenopausal symptoms, particularly sleep disturbances and anxiety, I knew something was shifting in my body. I also know that I was likely experiencing these symptoms earlier than natural due to the stress of the doctor program I was completing at that time.
As a practitioner, I was already familiar with the power of Ayurveda and herbal medicine, and I utilized those tools to the best of my ability, but I also recognized the importance of understanding hormones from a deeper, scientific perspective. This journey led me to bioidentical hormone therapy, and for the past year and a half, I have been applying topical hormones with incredible results.
One of the key things I’ve learned is that our liver plays a crucial role in hormone metabolism. Every hormone—whether naturally produced or supplemented—must be processed and detoxified through the liver. However, not all metabolic pathways are created equal. Some pathways are more favorable, leading to protective and balanced hormone metabolism, while others can create metabolites that are inflammatory or potentially harmful. This is why liver health is so essential, especially during perimenopause and menopause when hormone fluctuations are at their peak. The pathways that your body favors can be tested. I regularly order these tests for women. The preferred hormonal pathways can be supported with very specific and now common supplements.
For years, there was a great deal of confusion around hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Older studies painted a frightening picture, linking estrogen to increased risks of breast cancer and cardiovascular disease. But in recent years, science has taken a major turn. Many of those studies have been re-examined and even disproven. We now understand that bioidentical hormones (BHRT different from HRT) —when used correctly—offer profound benefits, protecting long-term bone, heart, and brain health, along with many other benefits such as countering cortisol, supporting restful sleep, lowering anxiety, maintaining muscle mass, supporting collagen production, etc.
The way I work, the foundational principles of health need to be addressed first or at least simultaneously, as a poor diet, excessive alcohol consumption and other lifestyle factors along with lack of exercise majorly influence hormone production and women’s general well-being.
This new understanding of BHRT has been a game-changer, not just for me personally, but for so many women who have been left struggling with symptoms and fearful of their options.
If you’re navigating perimenopause, menopause, or simply interested in supporting your hormonal health, don’t overlook the liver. Nourishing this vital organ through proper nutrition, herbal support, and mindful detoxification can ensure that your hormones are metabolized efficiently and in a way that supports overall well-being.
